Well, the ruse of “herbal cigarettes” on the set of Equus is finally over — Daniel Radcliffe is a smoker! And he allegedly smokes a pack a day. [source]
That’s him outside of a hospital in London. According to the Daily Mail, he lit up almost as soon as he stepped outside. [source]
For those who don’t know all about Dan in Equus (*cough*), in the play, his character has several scenes in which he smokes. In the press for the play, Daniel’s people were pretty adamant that they were herbal, back in 2007 when an anti-smoking organization spoke out against him, noting that he is a role model for young children. [source] When I attended a performance late in the London run in 2007, it definitely smelled like real ciggies to me, and this is coming from the daughter of a life-long smoker.
So, yeah, DRad, now half-way to 20, and “grown up” enough to finally admit to it (via doing it in public), is now a smoker. Blech. Considering how smoking is becoming less prevalent in my generation and his, it’s kind of sad. He *is* a role model, but also, it’s just so unattractive. And a pack a day? One way ticket to health problems!
Chalk it up to method gone wrong, I suppose. I wonder if we’ll see some PR spin of DRad trying to quit later.
