About Mavenity

maven; noun: trusted expert in a particular field, who seeks to pass knowledge on to others; intense gatherers of information and impressions, and so are often the first to pick up on new or nascent trends.

Enter, all ye who seek a mish-mash of humor, entertainment reviews, social commentary, sociology and the occasional rant.  I am your (not always so humble) Maven, a moniker I adopted after reading Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point (I am also part Connector).  When picking a title for a blog that could encompass everything I wanted to talk about, it made the most sense. I’ve tried in the past to blog under a narrow topic, thinking it would give my blog direction (afterall, it’s good to have a gimmick), but found that when I wanted to, say, talk about something happening in politics or in my life, that it didn’t suit my audience.

You can find more about me, my worldview and some of my aims in the “About the Maven” section. But I’d also like to keep a run-down of the topics I’d like to cover and/or this blog covers often.

Several things to potentially be discussed:

  • The Bizarre Habits of ‘Fabulous’ Pregnant Women: gaining no weight, wearing torture heels at 7 months, etc. etc.
  • Harry Potter nerdism (because, let’s face it, I am one!)
  • Fashion reality (a given)
  • Various things of interest to the so-called “Millennial” generation, as I slowly realize I do, unfortunately, fit that title
  • My Quarter Life Crisis, and how this ties into Millennial issues
  • Online dating (God Help Me)
  • My various encounters with Crazy People (see: online dating; HP fandom)
  • Twitter, Facebook and other social networking phenomenon (aka: a FB early adopter whines and complains like an old person)
  • Nerds, dorks, geeks and their various hybrids
  • Emos, indie hipsters and nerd chic — the new generation of “cool”
  • Post-feminism, its implications, and other notable issues of contemporary feminism (via current topic commentary, TV & film analysis and so on)
  • Animal activism, as it pertains to my activities volunteering for the MSPCA
  • My endless, unrepentant love for Gmail
  • travel (London, Germany, etc.)
  • obscure TV shows and cinema that I feel deserve a shout out – Pepper Dennis, Black Books, Bonekickers, Ashes to Ashes, etc.

And so on! I am hoping the blog will evolve as I find new things to talk about. I love feedback, and am open to suggestions.
